The premium tier has survived another billing cycle. This report documents the conditions under which continuation occurred and the downstream effects observed.
Background
Someone keeps paying for a higher tier because downgrading requires comparing features they no longer remember choosing. The comparison is not technically difficult. It requires navigating to a settings page, reading two columns of feature checkmarks, identifying which features the current account uses, and selecting the lower tier. The total time required is approximately four minutes.
The four minutes have not been spent. The billing cycle has.
Findings
The service feels optional each day while billing treats it as permanent. This asymmetry is the operative condition. On any given day, the service could be cancelled. On no given day is that day the day. The gap between could and will has now accommodated multiple billing cycles without closure.
Consequence one: the unused premium tier survives one more billing cycle. The household absorbs the charge. The charge is not disputed.
Consequence two: the household starts planning around its continued existence. A streaming service that was once described as temporary has entered the household budget as a line item. A line item is not temporary. A line item is infrastructure.
Consequence three: a temporary service gains permanent budget status. Permanent budget status is the condition in which removing the service would require the same comparison exercise that kept it, now applied in reverse, across all the features the household has begun treating as available.
Assessment
Cancellation feels harder than paying. This feeling is accurate. The effort required to cancel has not changed since the original subscription. The cost of cancellation has increased by the amount of planning that now assumes the service's availability.
