Provisional Order on Reply From Preview
On the attention management system that became a second inbox by surviving one mute setting.
Consider the alternative timeline in which reply from preview was never designed.
In that timeline, a message arrives. The user opens the application, reads the message in full context, considers the thread, and types a reply. The reply is sent. The application is closed. The notification panel remains a list of items requiring deliberate attention, not a surface for generating correspondence.
That timeline does not exist. This one does.
In this timeline, someone sends a quick reply from the notification panel and later forgets the conversation happened. The reply went out from preview. The thread continued. The previewer did not return to the application to read the replies, because the notification panel had already handled it, or appeared to have handled it, which produces the same behavioral outcome as actually handling it.
The alert is called noise. That is why it was managed, then muted. Muting is the evidence that the alert was identified as a problem. The problem was: too much attention pulled to the screen. The solution was: remove the pull. Removing the pull through muting did not remove the underlying behavior, which was checking.
The check becomes habitual even after alerts are muted. Someone checks the muted channel. They do this because a coworker mentioned activity there, or because enough time has passed that uncertainty about the channel's content has accumulated past a threshold. The check is performed through preview. The reply is sent through preview. The conversation accumulates in an inbox that was specifically closed.
Attention management turns into another inbox.
The provisional order is this: any case of reply from preview surviving one mute setting is promoted from alert to habit. The habit will not be interrupted by another mute setting because the next mute setting will produce the same checking behavior. It will steals one extra check of the screen, the check will become the new management strategy, and the management strategy will require management.
