Provisional Finding on Bio Rewrite For Rooms A Field Guide to Pre-Entry Profile Behavior

Stage 1: The Platform Is Installed

A person installs an application for live audio conversations. The application is new. Several people the person follows are using it. The person creates an account.

The account requires a bio. The bio is the first impression one makes before entering a room. The person writes a bio.

It is not right.

Stage 2: The Rewrite Problem

The first bio is functional but uses a professional framing that feels misaligned with the register of the application. The application is informal. The bio sounds like a LinkedIn summary that has been trimmed. It has been trimmed.

A second bio is written. It is more casual. It sounds forced.

Stage 3: Research

The person examines the bios of people they consider well-calibrated participants. The bios vary considerably. Several of the most respected accounts have bios that say almost nothing. One says only a year. Another lists three words separated by slashes. A third has a single short sentence that manages to convey competence and approachability simultaneously through means the person cannot identify.

This research does not help.

Stage 4: The Core Problem

The bio must communicate who the person is in the context of this specific application without claiming too much credibility or too little, without being earnest or ironic in the wrong proportions, without referencing things that will become dated, and without taking itself more seriously than the medium permits.

These are simultaneous requirements. They have not been harmonized.

Stage 5: What The Rewrites Contain

Version seven introduces a job title. Version eight removes the job title and adds a hobby. Version nine removes the hobby on the grounds that the hobby seems performative. Version ten adds a city. Version eleven removes the city because the city implies a regional identity the person is not prepared to maintain.

The person has been revising documentation for an experience they have not yet had.

Stage 6: The Provisional Finding

The bio is not the barrier. The bio has become the activity that replaces entering the room. As long as the bio requires work, the room does not require entry. This is not a decision the person made. It is a behavioral outcome they are inside of without having agreed to it.

The provisional nature of the finding reflects that the bio rewrite could, in theory, complete. It has not completed yet.

Observable Indicators

If a person can describe what their bio currently says, what it said in the previous version, why they changed it, and what problem remains unsolved, but cannot describe what they would say if they were actually in a room: Stage 5 has been reached.

The room continues to operate without them. Rooms do not wait.
