Review of Assembly Process
The stack was assembled four days before the appointment. Assembly required locating each item individually, confirming its current validity, and placing it in a sequence that reflects likely order of presentation.
The order has been revised twice since assembly.
Annual Review Findings
Finding one: the stack is complete. The stack has been complete for three days. The completeness of the stack does not affect the appointment date.
Finding two: assembling the documents ahead of schedule transferred the anxiety of document assembly into the anxiety of document proximity. The stack now occupies visual real estate on the counter and draws attention each time the person passes through the kitchen. This attention is not productive. It is a repeated acknowledgment that the appointment is approaching.
Finding three: the printed backup confirmation was printed because the person's phone once died during an airport check-in. The vaccination site is not an airport. This precedent was applied regardless.
The Absurd Rule
A document stack assembled more than forty-eight hours before an appointment becomes a monument to the appointment rather than preparation for it. The stack ceases to be a tool and begins to be a reminder. Reminders were already handled by the calendar.
There are now two reminder systems: the calendar and the stack. They communicate the same information.
The Contradiction
The purpose of the document stack is to reduce friction at the point of appointment. The stack has been staged. Friction at the point of appointment is, to the extent a person can control it, reduced. This outcome was achieved on Tuesday.
It is now Friday. The appointment is Sunday. The stack continues to occupy the counter and produce no further outcomes.
