This version is efficient. This version happens some of the time.
The Standard Version
The destination is stated. A brief exchange occurs. The exchange establishes that both parties understand the journey is happening and that the terms are being confirmed. This exchange may include: a question about the route, a comment on traffic, a fare negotiation, or a statement about payment method.
The exchange is not primarily about information. Both parties already have the information. The exchange is a ritual of initiation: the moment at which the journey officially begins and both parties have confirmed their participation.
The Fare Version
The fare negotiation is the most structured form of this ritual. It has established positions, a range of acceptable outcomes, and a conclusion that both parties recognize as a conclusion. It is resolved quickly. The resolution is less important than the process.
A fare negotiation that results in no change from the meter fare is still a negotiation that took place. Both parties confirmed their positions. Both parties agreed. The journey is now underway with a social contract that has been verbally ratified.
