Provisional Order on Festival Cleaning Burst
The ceiling fan. Nobody mentioned the ceiling fan all year. It is mentioned now.
Provisional Order on Festival Cleaning Burst
What Would Have Happened Without Diwali
The ceiling fan would have been cleaned in March, or not at all. March was assessed as a reasonable cleaning window. March came and went. The fan continued to operate. Dust accumulated at the standard rate.
The kitchen cabinet tops would have remained unexamined until someone tall enough to see them moved into the flat or a photograph from above was taken for reasons unrelated to cleanliness.
The curtains would have been washed at the start of monsoon season, or after, depending on how the first week of rain felt.
The lamps would have been cleaned when one of them flickered.
None of these timelines have produced the cleaning. The cleaning has been produced by Diwali.
What Actually Happens Before Diwali
Two weeks out: a list is written. The list contains items that have not appeared on any list since the previous Diwali.
One week out: the list is discussed. Tasks are assigned. The assignment of tasks creates, for the first time, a shared understanding of who in the household is responsible for the ceiling fan.
Nobody had previously thought about who was responsible for the ceiling fan.
Three days out: the cleaning begins. It proceeds with urgency that is genuine. The house will be seen. Guests are coming. The ceiling fan will be seen by guests who will not be looking at the ceiling fan because guests at a Diwali gathering are not auditing ventilation fixtures.
The cleaning happens anyway.
The One Extra Confirmation
Something is cleaned. Someone checks it. Someone confirms it was cleaned. The confirmation becomes expected before anyone asks. Not confirming later feels like not completing the task.
Outcome
The house is clean. The ceiling fan is clean. The fan will return to its standard dust accumulation schedule starting November.
Next Diwali: the fan will be cleaned again. The cycle will have the same urgency. The fan will have the same dust.
The counterfactual — a clean fan at an arbitrary point in the year — has not occurred and shows no sign of occurring.
Diwali did not create the cleaning standard. Diwali provided the deadline. The standard was always possible. The deadline was always required.
