In the version of events where the power cut did not happen, the lift is ready.

The door opens. The button for floor four is pressed. The lift travels to floor four without incident. The person arrives. The visit proceeds normally.

This is the baseline. This is how it works on the days that are not today.

Today's Version

The power was out for three minutes. The display now shows floor four. The lift appears operational.

The question is whether "appears operational" and "is operational" are currently equivalent. Under normal conditions, they are. After a power interruption, there is a brief period in which the lift may have completed its reset cycle or may be in an intermediate state. The lobby does not have access to this information. The lobby can see the display. The display says four.

The Calculation

Option A: Take the lift. The lift is probably fine. Modern lifts are designed to handle power interruptions. The display shows a valid floor. No error message is visible. The doors open normally. Probability of incident: low.

Option B: Take the stairs. The stairs are definitely fine. The stairs do not have a reset cycle. The stairs have not been affected by the power cut. The stairs require climbing four floors. Probability of incident: zero.

The difference between low and zero is four flights.

The Counterfactual Continued

In the version of events where the person takes the stairs, they arrive at floor four having made a decision they feel retrospectively was unnecessary. The lift resumes normal operation during their ascent. They watch it pass them through the stairwell window.

In the version where they take the lift, it works. They arrive at floor four. They note that they had mild concern that turned out to be unfounded. They do not report this to anyone.

Both versions reach floor four. One has stairs. The person at the lobby is still calculating.

The lift is taken. The lift works. The calculation was correct on both options.
