Provisional Order on Rest Day Productivity
Any rest day productivity stated as a boundary must be defended even after maintaining it becomes inconvenient.
What
This notice classifies behavior in which a person designates a day as a rest day and subsequently produces a written inventory of activities that qualify as rest. Days of this type will be referred to as rest day productivity.
The classification applies regardless of: whether the inventory is handwritten or digital, whether the activities listed are genuinely restful by external assessment, and whether the person completing the inventory considers it a form of rest or a form of planning.
Criteria
A day qualifies for this classification if:
- The person has stated, to themselves or others, that the day is a rest day.
- A checklist, list, or assessment of acceptable activities has been created on or before that day.
- At least one item on the checklist has been evaluated against a criterion of whether it counts.
Someone calls a day a rest day and creates a checklist of acceptable forms of rest. This is the documented behavior. The checklist was created on the rest day. The checklist was a work product.
Operating Principle
The first case of rest day productivity changes one small decision without being discussed. The decision was to have a rest day. The creation of the checklist was a second decision that arrived immediately after the first and was not recognized as a decision. It was recognized as preparation.
The 2022 language of protecting your peace turned personal limits into something people also performed publicly. The rest day was a limit. The checklist was its administrative infrastructure. The infrastructure was not restful.
After repetition, other people begin adjusting their behavior around rest day productivity. The person who takes a rest day without a checklist is sometimes described as really taking a rest day. The adverb carries weight.
Date of Effect
A limit counts as successful only if the person enforcing it can prove they still care about everyone affected. The checklist is the proof. It demonstrates that the rest was considered, planned, and allocated according to defensible criteria.
Eventually rest day productivity acquires an unwritten enforcement system that everyone denies creating. The undocumented rest day is available. It is taken less often.
