Provisional Order on Summer Power Bill

The air conditioner has been running since May. June has arrived. The power bill has not yet arrived. Its contents are being emotionally anticipated.

In the version of events where the power bill did not arrive monthly:

The air conditioner runs when the room is hot. The room is hot from May through September. The air conditioner runs. No calculation is associated with the running. The room is at an acceptable temperature.

This Version

The power bill arrives monthly. This is known. May's bill will reflect May's usage. June's bill will reflect June's usage, which has included eleven days of air conditioner use and is accumulating.

The bill's amount is unknown. Its existence is certain. Its existence has begun to produce a secondary calculation at the moment of switching on: is this necessary, or merely comfortable?

The Comfort Calculation

The room is thirty-one degrees. The air conditioner produces a room at twenty-four degrees. The difference is seven degrees of comfort. Seven degrees of comfort costs some amount per hour, which accumulates across the month, which arrives in a bill whose amount produces an emotional response that has not yet occurred but is pre-emptively shaping behavior.

The pause at noon on Wednesday was this calculation happening. The pause lasted six seconds. The air conditioner was then turned on because thirty-one degrees is genuinely hot.

The Resolution

The bill arrived. The amount was noted. The amount was accepted as the cost of living somewhere hot during summer with an air conditioner.

The following day, the room was at thirty-one degrees and the air conditioner was turned on without a pause.

The pause will return about two weeks before the next bill.
