Record of Delivery Address Paranoia

The address was entered correctly. It is checked again. It will be checked once more before the order is placed, and once more after.

3 MIN READfood delivery dependency

To: The person who checks the delivery address three times before submitting.

The address is correct. You know the address is correct because it is your address, and you have lived at your address for long enough that it cannot plausibly be wrong, and you entered it from a saved default that the platform populated automatically from the last order that also arrived correctly.

And yet.

The paranoia does not originate from uncertainty about the address. That is the part that requires sympathy, however reluctant. The paranoia originates from the gap between the cost of being wrong and the effort required to check. The cost of the package arriving at a wrong address is: a lost package, a conversation with customer service, a delay of several days, the ambient frustration of a thing that should have been simple. The effort to check the address is: two seconds.

Two seconds to eliminate a nonzero probability of a real inconvenience. The math is straightforward. The checking is rational.

The Part That Requires Sympathy

The problem is that the checking does not produce confidence. It produces the temporary experience of having checked, which is not the same as confidence, because confidence would end the checking, and the checking does not end.

The address is checked after it is auto-populated. The address is checked after the first item is added to the cart. The address is checked at the payment screen, where it appears again in a summary box that exists specifically to allow this check. The order is placed. The confirmation email arrives. The confirmation email contains the address. The confirmation email is opened. The address in the confirmation email is checked.

The address is correct. The address has always been correct. The checking does not make it more correct.

What the Paranoia Is Actually About

A package sent to the correct address can still not arrive. This is known. There are other steps between a correct address and a delivered package, and any of them can fail, and the delivery address check controls for none of them. The checking concentrates anxiety onto the one variable that is actually under control because the other variables are not.

This is a coping mechanism. It is not an unreasonable one. It is still a little sad.

Closing Note

The order has been placed. The address is correct. The package will arrive in two to four business days. You will check the tracking link five times before it does.

This is also recorded without judgment.
