Field Notice on Desk Reset Promise
The promise is made on Friday. The desk is not reset on Friday. The promise carries over to Monday, which is when the next promise is made.
It was going to happen on Friday.
Friday afternoons were the right time because the week was ending and a clean desk on Monday felt like a kind gesture toward the person who would use the desk on Monday, which was the same person, arriving with better posture than the person who left on Friday.
The plan was: clear the surface, return items to their designated locations, throw away the papers that no longer needed to exist, file the papers that did need to exist but had been resting on the surface for twelve days waiting for the right moment.
The right moment was Friday afternoon.
Friday Afternoon
On the first Friday, a call ran late and the afternoon condensed into forty minutes of inbox clearing that did not involve the desk. The desk was noted. The reset was rescheduled to Monday morning before the first call.
On the second Friday, the desk reset was on the list, which was the first time it had formally appeared on the list. Appearing on the list was progress. The list also contained six other items that were more time-sensitive, and by the time they were addressed it was 6:03pm and the desk looked the way it looked.
On the third Friday, no call ran late and the inbox was manageable. The desk reset was the second item on the list. The second item on the list is where tasks wait to become first items, and this transition did not occur on the third Friday because the first item took longer than expected.
The Nature of the Promise
The promise was always about the version of Friday afternoon that does not arrive: the version where the week is finished at 4pm, the inbox is empty, the calls have ended, and there is a quiet thirty minutes that belong to the desk. This version of Friday afternoon has been planned for approximately forty Fridays.
At some point the desk reset stopped being a cleaning task and became a recurring commitment that the desk does not share.
Monday
Monday arrives. The desk is in the same state as Thursday. The promise is made again, for the following Friday, with the same sincerity as the first time. The sincerity is genuine. The Friday afternoon is theoretical. Both things are true.
