Record of Job Change Reveal Timing

The reveal must be neither too early nor too late, must not be performed before the offer letter arrives, and must not be delayed so long that someone learns from LinkedIn.

COUNTERFACTUAL RECORD: Job Change Reveal Timing (JCRT) Filed for reference. Not for distribution.

Scenario Under Review

A person has accepted a new position and must now manage the order, timing, and channel of disclosure across multiple relationships simultaneously. The offer letter has arrived. Notice has been given, or is about to be given. The announcement is pending.

The question is not whether to announce. The question is sequence.

What Happens When Timing Is Correct

In the optimal scenario, close contacts learn before the announcement is made public. The public announcement follows within 24 hours of the last critical personal conversation. The LinkedIn post arrives third, not first. The post is congratulated by people who already knew, which produces the appearance of a well-managed network and a thoughtfully handled transition.

No one learns from a notification. No one receives a screenshot from someone else. The offer is not described before it is confirmed.

What Happens When Timing Is Early

The offer is mentioned to two people before the letter arrives. One of them mentions it to a mutual contact in passing. The mutual contact congratulates the person before the notice has been given to the current employer. The current employer is not yet aware. Several days of ambient awkwardness follow. Nothing is technically wrong. Everything feels technically wrong.

What Happens When Timing Is Late

A colleague learns from LinkedIn. They do not mention this. The person does not know they have learned from LinkedIn. At the next interaction, a brief question about the new role arrives without the prefix of surprise that would indicate genuine fresh information. The conversation proceeds normally, which is its own small problem.

The announcement performs the change as much as the change itself performs it.

Counterfactual of Interest

In a counterfactual where the announcement carries no social weight: where the job change is simply a change and not a performance of the change: none of this sequencing would be necessary. The job would change. People would learn over time. The timeline would be irrelevant.

This counterfactual is not the one being lived in.

Finding

There is a window. The window has unwritten edges. The window is understood by everyone involved and documented by no one. Falling outside it in either direction produces its own category of problem, and the categories are not equivalent: early is recoverable, late is noted.

No revision to the window is proposed at this time.
