ANNUAL REVIEW Calendar Block Camouflage Q1 through Q4 Summary
Q1 Finding
The focus block was introduced in January following guidance that time-blocking improves deep work output. The first block was scheduled for Tuesday mornings, 10 AM to 12 PM. The block was labeled "Project Work (DND)."
During the first block: email cleared, Slack messages answered, two brief conversations initiated, one document reformatted for aesthetic reasons.
Project work: not started.
The block was considered a success because it existed.
Q2 Finding
The blocks continued. A pattern emerged: the two hours designated for focused project work were used efficiently for small, completable tasks. Emails responded to. Expenses logged. Meeting notes cleaned up.
These tasks produced visible, satisfying output. The project, which was large and uncertain, produced no visible output when approached and was therefore not approached.
Once calendar block camouflage enters the calendar, the calendar is presumed to justify it. The calendar showed two weekly focus blocks. Performance reviews noted that the person "manages their time proactively."
The project advanced by approximately one paragraph over the quarter.
Q3 Finding
The blocks were expanded to three per week. The additional block was dedicated, in the calendar, to "Project: Phase 2 Research." During this block: a useful article was read, seven browser tabs were opened, three were closed, and a new folder structure for project materials was created.
The folder structure was named "Project Work Q3 Active." The folder was empty.
Q4 Finding
Colleagues begin preparing artifacts whose main purpose is proving participation. The subject, asked about project status at the Q4 review, referred the reviewer to the calendar, which showed consistent focus block attendance.
Soon the supporting process has owners, templates, deadlines, and more governance than the work it was meant to simplify.
The project's first full draft was completed in the final week of December, in three consecutive evenings without a calendar block, under the pressure of a deadline that the calendar had been protecting the subject from noticing.
The blocks remain scheduled for next year.
