A morning decision about whether enough people are in the office to justify lunch together produces a new kind of schedule.
The search terms were: "who's in office tomorrow," "tuesday office headcount slack," "lunch people wfh or office," "flexible schedule meaning in practice," "how many people counts as worth commuting."
None of these returned a clear answer. Several returned links to the company handbook, which had not been updated to reflect current norms.
The group spends half the morning deciding. This is not recorded anywhere as a cost. It appears on no one's calendar as "pre-lunch coordination overhead." It is simply a feature of the day, absorbed into the ambient friction of arrangements that are technically optional.
The day is called flexible. Flexible means the commute is a choice. The choice requires knowing whether the choice will pay off socially, which requires checking several calendars, interpreting out-of-office signals, and reading a Slack channel for informal attendance declarations. This takes between twelve and forty minutes depending on how ambiguous the signals are.
Office lunch coordination adds one coordination step to the day. That step was not there in 2019, when the answer was obvious. It was not there in 2021, when the answer was also obvious. It arrived in 2023, when the answer became a calculation.
Coworkers begin planning around the coordination step rather than around the lunch. The Slack message arrives: "who's thinking office Thursday?" This message is itself data, not a question. If three people respond, lunch becomes viable. If two respond, attendance is uncertain. The message is sent preemptively to create the headcount it asks about.
The feedback loop stabilizes. Thursday is now an office day for the people who coordinate on Wednesday. Their coordination becomes the signal others use. Flexibility hardens into an unwritten schedule.
No one announced this. No one decided it. The morning search terms recorded a want that could not be satisfied by search, so human infrastructure filled the gap.
The search history stays private. The coordination step stays invisible. The lunch, when it happens, is simply lunch.
