Provisional Order on Coworker Credit Ambiguity
When AI assistance is useful enough to keep and awkward enough to hide, the omission becomes the habit.
Someone thanks a coworker for feedback. The email, the deck, the document , all improved by a tool that shaped the phrasing, caught the gaps, smoothed the register. The coworker is thanked. The tool is not mentioned.
This is not deception. It is omission. The distinction feels important for a moment, then less so.
Under the governing rule: any behavior repeated twice becomes procedure until someone deliberately breaks it. The first omission was a judgment call. The second was habit formation. The third was simply how things are done.
What follows is the counterfactual. Suppose the tool had been mentioned. Suppose the email had included a parenthetical , "AI-assisted, for transparency" , or the deck had carried a small footnote. The coworker might have found this odd, or admirable, or unnecessary. The team might have standardized it, or ignored it, or started asking questions that nobody was ready to answer.
None of that happened. The easier path held.
The private check has a procedure now. Before sending, read the output once more with an eye toward anything that does not sound like you. Adjust two or three phrases. This takes ninety seconds and produces plausible deniability without requiring it. The check becomes part of the workflow. The tool use stays off the record not because it is secret but because the moment to mention it keeps passing.
Assisted work becomes routine. Disclosure stays exceptional.
This is not a moral failure concentrated in any single person. It is a coordination problem distributed across early adoption. The tools spread faster than any shared language for acknowledging them. The people using them are not waiting for permission. They are waiting for norms, which arrive slowly and after the fact.
February accelerates this. Short months, mid-cycle reviews, the particular texture of working relationships under deadline. Maintenance mode requires less explanation than disclosure does.
The coworker credit ambiguity adds one private manual check. That check expands to fill the available ninety seconds. The person doing it will recognize the description. They will not forward this to anyone.
