Incident 1. Exit from a commercial building, 11:22 AM. The holder exited ahead of a person carrying bags. The holder held the door. The distance between the holder and the following person was approximately four meters. The following person jogged. The jog was not requested.
Incident 2. Office corridor, first week back at full occupancy. The holder extended the hold past the usual release point. The reason offered: the reflex that developed during the period when fewer people used the corridors and proximity felt different. The hold was noted by neither party aloud.
Incident 3. Building entrance during festive week, higher foot traffic than usual. The holder held for a person who was not yet within polite holding range. The person nodded and walked faster. Two people behind that person also walked faster, because the chain had been established.
The courtesy extended itself three feet past the point at which it became a social obligation for the recipient.
Pattern analysis. Someone holds a door open from too far away and accidentally makes the next person hurry. This is the outcome in the majority of documented cases. The act is courteous. The consequence is a mild obligation transferred to the recipient.
