Terms Governing File Upload Hovering
The drag-and-drop zone has been certified safe, yet the cursor remains in orbit.
Article I. Jurisdiction
These Terms govern all activity occurring within the rectangular upload zone designated by a dashed border, a cloud icon, and the phrase "drag files here or click to browse." Jurisdiction begins the moment the user's cursor enters the upload zone and hesitates. Jurisdiction does not end when the user moves the cursor away. Jurisdiction ends when the file has been uploaded, confirmed, and the user has accepted the confirmation as trustworthy.
Article II. The Core Behavior Under Review
The subject hovers a file above the upload area and does not release it.
The interface has communicated, in plain language, that both drag-and-drop and click-to-browse are valid options. The subject has read this communication. The subject has chosen drag-and-drop. The subject has dragged. The subject is now stationary, file in hand, approximately three centimeters above the target zone, waiting for additional information the interface has already provided.
This is not a malfunction. This is the governing condition.
Article III. The Underlying Concern
The concern is not whether dragging works. The concern is whether dragging works in this case, right now, with this particular file type, on this specific browser, on a Tuesday.
A second control is used to verify the first. The user moves the cursor to the "click to browse" option. The user clicks. The file is uploaded through the backup path. The user feels, briefly, that the drag-and-drop zone has been given a fair trial and found not guilty of existing.
Article IV. Escalation Clause
When a digital control creates doubt, additional clicking is recognized as a valid audit method.
The upload completes. The confirmation screen appears. The user looks at the confirmation screen. The user looks at it again. A second control is used to verify the first control.
The file was uploaded once.
Article V. Precedent
This pattern has been documented across all file-hosting services, form submissions, and email attachment interfaces in which both drag-and-drop and click-to-browse options are presented simultaneously. The simultaneous presentation of two options is read as evidence that neither option is entirely safe.
Article VI. Governing Rule
When a digital control creates doubt, additional clicking is recognized as a valid audit method. This rule does not expire. It applies equally to interfaces that are fully functional.
