Article I: Definitions

For the purposes of this agreement, "single sock" refers to any sock from which the corresponding partner has been separated by mechanisms including but not limited to: laundry cycle rotation, unknown drawer migration, misattribution to a different household member, and scenarios the reserve holder prefers not to think about.

"The reserve" refers to the collection of single socks maintained against the possibility of partner return.

Article II: Retention Policy

Any lost sock reserve that survives three cleanups must be treated as permanent household infrastructure.

A sock is eligible for reserve retention if it satisfies any one of the following conditions:

(a) The sock is newer than six months and the loss is considered temporary;

(b) The sock is a specialist item (thermal, ankle, patterned) whose replacement would require a dedicated purchase;

(c) The sock's partner was seen recently and is considered locally missing rather than globally absent;

(d) The sock has been in the reserve for more than eight months and its extended tenure has conferred a form of squatter's rights.

Article III: Cleanup Provisions

At each household cleanup, the reserve will be reviewed. The review will proceed as follows: each sock will be examined, identified, and a determination made regarding its future. Approximately 40% of reserve socks will be assessed as likely to have their partners return. These will be retained. Approximately 30% will be assessed as having partners whose location is truly unknown but whose absence has not been long enough to constitute abandonment. These will also be retained.

The reserve will not decrease meaningfully.

Article IV: Disposal Authority

A single sock may be discarded only by the person who owns it, at a time of their choosing, with no requirement to notify the other household member. However, disposal of any sock that was "definitely just here" requires a waiting period of no fewer than fourteen days from the time of that assessment.

Article V: Infrastructure Status

The reserve occupies a dedicated corner of the bottom drawer. Adjacent items have adjusted. The infrastructure status was acquired on the date the reserve first survived a cleanup without the initiating party locating its partner.

A future cleanup will propose full reserve disposal. Another party will note that several socks were recently purchased and the reserve should not be conflated with older items. The cleanup will conclude without resolving this question.

The reserve continues.
