Terms Governing Office Coffee Justification
Coffee purchased after arriving at the office functions primarily as evidence that the commute was worth making.
Terms Governing Office Coffee Justification Effective Upon First In-Office Beverage Purchase
Section 1. Definitions
"Office Coffee Justification" refers to the purchase of coffee or a related beverage upon arrival at an office location, where the primary function of the purchase is to provide the commute with an experiential anchor that it would otherwise lack. The day is called flexible while requiring extra location planning.
The beverage is secondary. The anchor is the product.
Section 2. Triggering Conditions
These terms apply when all of the following are true: the person has commuted to a location they were not required to commute to on that day; the commute required more than fifteen minutes; and the person has, upon arrival, purchased a beverage they could have prepared at home for less cost and with less effort.
Under these terms, that purchase constitutes office coffee justification. The purchase is complete. These terms are now operative.
Section 3. Downstream Schedule Effects
Office coffee justification adds one coordination step to the day. Coworkers start planning around that step: a colleague who arrives, buys coffee, and settles at a visible desk signals availability and location in a way that a calendar entry cannot fully replicate.
Flexibility hardens into an unwritten schedule. The unwritten schedule is not enforced. It does not need to be enforced. It is self-reinforcing.
Section 4. The Governing Rule
Under the governing rule, office coffee justification becomes procedure once repetition feels safer than reconsidering it. In 2023, hybrid attendance rules were still being negotiated at most organizations. The coffee was not being negotiated. The coffee was already settled.
Section 5. Termination Clause
These terms terminate when either: the person stops commuting to optional locations, or the beverage purchase stops functioning as an anchor and becomes purely a beverage purchase. The second condition has not been observed in the review population.
Section 6. Notice
The coffee costs more at the office. This is known. These terms do not address this.
