Progress Report: Prompt Tab Minimization Reporting Period: Current Quarter

Current Status

The AI tab is open. The tab has been open since morning. The tab has been minimized eleven times.

Prompt tab minimization is the practice of reducing an AI window to the taskbar whenever a colleague approaches or passes within sightline. The help is useful enough to use and awkward enough to disguise.

Observed Pattern

Someone minimizes an AI window whenever another person walks behind their desk. The window is reopened when the colleague has moved a sufficient distance. The threshold distance is not formally defined. It is known.

Prompt tab minimization adds one private manual check to the workflow. The check is not about the work quality. The check is about the ambient social environment. Both conditions are monitored independently.

Downstream Effects

That check becomes part of the normal workflow. The worker is now performing two simultaneous assessments: the task assessment and the proximity assessment. The proximity assessment runs continuously. It does not require conscious attention. It has become automatic.

Assisted work becomes routine while disclosure stays exceptional. This gap does not close through repetition.

Structural Observation

Under the governing rule, prompt tab minimization becomes procedure once repetition feels safer than reconsidering it. In 2023, office AI use spread faster than disclosure etiquette. The gap between adoption and acknowledged use was filled by individual judgment, which was inconsistent, which meant the social cost of disclosure was personal rather than shared.

Prompt tab minimization is the physical manifestation of that cost: one private check, eleven times a day, for each of the colleagues whose opinion matters enough to be avoided.

Note

The tab is currently open. No one is walking behind the desk.
