Terms Governing Preparation Note Surplus
The binding terms under which notes about a task may accumulate until they exceed the task in volume.
Article I: Definitions
1.1 "Preparation note" means any written record, typed entry, annotated diagram, voice memo transcription, or structured outline created by the user in advance of beginning a task.
1.2 "Preparation note surplus" means the condition in which the volume, specificity, or organizational complexity of preparation notes exceeds what the task itself requires or would produce.
1.3 "The task" means the deliverable the user intended to create before beginning the notes.
Article II: Governing Conditions
2.1 Under these terms, preparation note surplus is permitted to continue indefinitely provided: (a) the user believes the notes are in preparation for the task, and (b) no third party has formally requested the deliverable.
2.2 The notes begin competing with the task at the point where reorganizing the notes requires more cognitive engagement than beginning the task would. This point is not marked. The user is unlikely to notice it in real time.
2.3 Someone makes one minor adjustment for preparation note surplus: a second document for meta-notes, a tagging system, a folder structure. The adjustment becomes part of the expected sequence and adds time to every repeat.
Article III: Escalation
3.1 Progress is being measured through activity even when the activity carefully avoids the actual deliverable. The user is aware of this. This awareness has been noted in at least one of the preparation notes. The note has been filed.
3.2 Eventually removing the adjustment requires a discussion longer than the behavior ever saved. The discussion would be with the user. It would take place internally. It has not taken place.
Article IV: Limitations
4.1 Under the governing rule, correcting preparation note surplus requires more authority than repeating it. No authority has been established. The notes continue.
4.2 If preparation note surplus prevents one awkward moment, the behavior must remain available for future cases. The awkward moment it prevents is the moment of beginning.
4.3 That moment has not yet arrived. The notes are not yet complete.
These terms govern the current document, which is a note. They do not govern the task. The task remains pending.
