Terms Governing Traffic Signal Shade

Riders have developed a parallel stopping protocol that the signal infrastructure did not authorize.

Article I: Definitions

"Signal line" refers to the painted stop demarcation maintained by the relevant traffic authority at intersections equipped with signal equipment.

"Shade line" refers to the informal stopping position adopted by two-wheeler operators in proximity to shade-casting infrastructure, including but not limited to trees, flyovers, and extended building overhangs. The shade line is not painted. The shade line is understood.

"Rider" refers to any operator of a two-wheeled motor vehicle approaching a signalized intersection under ambient solar conditions that make the signal line a less preferred stopping position than the shade line.

Article II: Scope of Application

These terms govern rider behavior during daylight hours in conditions of meaningful solar exposure. They do not apply when shade and signal line coincide, in which case no conflict arises and no terms are necessary.

These terms apply automatically. No rider is required to have read them.

Article III: The Governing Behavior

Upon approach to a signalized intersection, the rider shall assess the available shade. If shade falls at a position that is forward of or behind the signal line, the rider shall stop at the shade position. This constitutes lawful adaptation under the doctrine of practical convenience, which is not a legal doctrine but is observed as though it were.

Article IV: Precedent

The shade line was established by first use. First use cannot now be identified. The shade line predates the memory of every current rider at the intersection. It will outlast the career of every current traffic enforcement officer. It is, in this sense, more durable than most formal infrastructure.

Article V: Conflict Resolution

In the event that a traffic officer indicates that the shade line violates the signal line, the rider acknowledges the signal line, proceeds through the intersection, and on the next cycle returns to the shade line. This constitutes resolution.

Article VI: Termination

These terms remain in effect while shade and sun coexist, which is to say indefinitely. No party may unilaterally terminate shade.
