The Cables Have Lost Their Original Jurisdiction
The cables are organized. The devices they belonged to may no longer exist. These facts coexist without creating urgency.
Field Notes: Mystery Cable Drawer
Current inventory, estimated:
- Three USB-A cables: function unknown, retained because USB-A still appears on some devices.
- One cable with a connector type that cannot be identified without research. Research has not been conducted.
- Two cables for a device that was replaced in 2021. Kept in case the replacement is itself replaced by something that requires them.
- One short white cable from a period before this phone. May be for a phone before that.
- A cable for an external hard drive. The hard drive exists somewhere. The cable is here.
- One cable with both ends present. Unclear which one is the input end.
Observation:
None of these cables are used regularly. Some are never used. All are retained on the grounds that their disposal would create a future problem.
Under the governing rule, once a mystery cable drawer acquires a daily workaround, the workaround becomes the official storage system. The daily workaround is: when a cable is needed, the real cable is found in the laptop bag. The drawer is consulted only in emergencies, and emergencies have not required any of these specific cables.
The emotional mechanics:
Throwing away a cable that might be needed creates more discomfort than the cost of keeping it. The cost of keeping it is: this drawer.
The drawer is kept.
