Classification Notice: Cold Pillow Rotation

The cold side of the pillow has been formally reclassified as a sleep resource, subject to availability.

What Is Being Classified

Cold Pillow Rotation is the practice of flipping a pillow to its reverse side in order to access the cooler surface. This is performed most commonly at night, during the initial attempt to sleep, and again approximately twenty minutes later when the first cool surface has reached ambient temperature.

Physical Properties of the Resource

The cold side of a standard household pillow retains its thermal advantage for between sixty and one hundred and twenty seconds under typical conditions. This duration decreases in warm ambient temperatures and increases in rooms that are already cool, where the cold side provides no meaningful advantage over the warm side.

The person performing Cold Pillow Rotation is generally aware of these facts.

Governing Rule

Under the governing rule, if cold pillow rotation promises better sleep, it may consume the sleep it was meant to protect.

Cold Pillow Rotation is performed during the minutes that could otherwise be used for sleep. It produces a brief thermal improvement. The improvement ends. The person then considers whether to repeat the rotation or accept the warm surface.

Classification Status

Cold Pillow Rotation has been classified as a thermal optimization ritual with limited efficacy and unlimited repetition potential.

The behavior is not irrational. Cold is preferable to warm. The preference is real. The resource is simply finite, and the ritual of seeking it is available at any hour without limit.

Most practitioners report that the pillow is eventually flipped onto the floor. The floor is cool. This is considered an escalation.
