TERMS AND CONDITIONS Subject: Career Lesson Anniversary Reflection (CLAR) Version: October 2021 Status: In effect. No sunset date.

1. Scope

These Terms apply to any individual preparing a professional reflection to be published on the occasion of a career anniversary. This includes but is not limited to: one-year marks, five-year marks, decade milestones, and any interval that is described as "hard to believe."

By proceeding with the reflection, the individual agrees to the following conditions.

2. Definitions

Career lesson: A generalization derived from professional experience during the period under review.

Testable lesson: A career lesson whose truth value can be assessed against a specific situation that occurred. Acceptable.

Universal lesson: A career lesson that could have been written by anyone at any point in any career without access to the individual's specific experience. Not acceptable under Section 4.

3. Permitted Content

The reflection may include: specific events, named projects, accurate counts (teams grown, countries worked in, products shipped), and characterizations of difficulty that name the difficulty rather than describing it as "a journey."

The reflection may include gratitude. The gratitude must name at least one person and one specific thing that person did. Gratitude expressed in aggregate ("everyone who believed in me") is not prohibited but is noted as carrying low information density.

4. Prohibited Content

Section 4(a): The reflection shall not contain the phrase "I learned that" unless the learning is specific enough to be tested. "I learned that hard work pays off" fails this test. "I learned that the third week of a sprint is the week the scope changes" passes.

Section 4(b): No lesson that applies equally to all years and all careers and all people. Work hard. Communicate clearly. Trust the team. These are not prohibited as practices. They are prohibited as lessons, because a lesson implies it was not known before and is now known due to a specific experience.

Section 4(c): No sentence ending with "and I wouldn't change a thing." All things contain changeable elements. The sentence is understood. It is still prohibited.

5. The Exception

One universal lesson is permitted per reflection. It must appear last. It must be brief. Its universality is acknowledged by the author, either explicitly or through placement. The exception exists because the reflection is a human document and human documents are allowed one moment in which precision is abandoned in favor of something that feels true even if it is not specific.

One moment. Not the whole reflection.

6. Enforcement

These Terms are not enforced by any external party. They are enforced, or not enforced, by the person who reads the reflection back to themselves before posting. That person knows whether it passes. The post goes out regardless.
