The Diwali Cleaning Discovery Is Now Officially a Procedure
A field guide to the annual excavation that produces forgotten objects, new piles, and the same decision deferred.
Phase 1: Authorization
Each year, approximately two to three weeks before Diwali, a cleaning initiative is authorized. The stated purpose is preparation for the festival. The actual scope expands within twenty minutes.
The authorization covers visible surfaces. The visible surfaces reveal objects that have been there for months. The objects require decisions.
Phase 2: Discovery
The Diwali Cleaning Discovery begins here.
Forgotten household objects are recovered from behind furniture, inside drawer bottoms, and from shelf positions accessible only by standing on something. These objects include: a cable whose function is no longer known, a small gift received at a function and placed here for safekeeping, a set of batteries possibly installed in something that stopped working, and several items categorized at the time of their last touching as "temporary."
Phase 3: Pile Formation
The objects cannot be discarded without inspection. The inspection cannot occur during the cleaning. A pile is created to hold the objects pending future decision.
Under the governing rule, any diwali cleaning discovery that works twice in city life becomes an unofficial protocol until conditions change. The pile is the protocol.
The pile gains a location. The location is near the area being cleaned. The pile is not, technically, part of the cleaned area.
Phase 4: Reintegration
The cleaning concludes. The pile remains. People nearby begin treating the pile as the expected outcome of cleaning rather than as evidence that the cleaning is incomplete.
Eventually the unofficial method becomes so reliable that newcomers are warned not to trust the official process without local context.
Phase 5: Next Year
The pile is absorbed back into the household. Some objects find permanent positions. Others are placed "temporarily" in locations that will be discovered again during the next festival cleaning.
The Diwali Cleaning Discovery saves a small amount of time or social friction. The pile is not a problem. The pile is a workaround. The workaround is now the procedure.
