The Door Will Be Held at an Unhelpful Distance

The door is being held. The person it is being held for is twelve meters away. Both parties are now committed to a situation that requires one of them to jog.

The person in front held the door.

This was a kind gesture. It was also, at the distance at which it was made, an act of optimism. The recipient was twelve meters away. Twelve meters, at a normal walking pace, is approximately eight seconds. Eight seconds is a long time to hold a door while maintaining eye contact with someone who is now, through no fault of their own, obligated to you.

Both parties are now in a situation.

The Terms

By holding the door, the person in front has made an offer. The offer is: I will hold this door for you, because you are near enough that letting it close would be rude. The offer contains an implicit assertion about the definition of near.

The recipient, at twelve meters, does not meet the standard definition of near. They are in a distance category that a more calibrated assessment would classify as: still coming, but not yet close enough to require door holding.

The door is being held. The terms are in effect. Both parties are managing the consequences.

The Recipient's Options

Option A: Jog. This resolves the situation quickly. It signals appreciation and releases the door holder from obligation. The cost is jogging, which is a physical action that was not part of the original plan for this walk.

Option B: Walk at normal pace. This is more dignified but extends the door-holding period. The door holder will be standing there for the full eight seconds. Eight seconds is a very long time when someone is watching.

Option C: A slightly increased pace that is not quite jogging but communicates awareness of the situation. This is the most common resolution. It satisfies both parties without full commitment to either position.

Option C is chosen. The door is reached in six seconds. The eye contact and a small nod complete the transaction.

The Learning

The door-holding distance should be four to five meters. This is known. The error was made in the moment of decision, when the situation seemed closer than it was. The situation will happen again. The same miscalculation will be made. Both parties will manage it with Option C.

This is the unspoken social contract: we will create small inconveniences for each other and resolve them through slight acceleration. We will not discuss it.
