There are four hundred and twelve unread notifications on the email app. The number has not been addressed. The number has stopped having meaning.
The email badge says four hundred and twelve.
This number is not alarming to the person looking at it. It was alarming at forty-seven. It was concerning at one hundred and twenty. Somewhere between one hundred and twenty and the current number, the count entered a range where the specific figure stopped being information and became context.
Four hundred and twelve is approximately the same as four hundred. Or three hundred. The important thing is that no specific email is being awaited with sufficient urgency to make the total relevant.
The Progress
January: badge count twelve. Emails were being managed. February: forty-seven. Inbox zero was discussed as a concept. April: one hundred and twenty. Inbox zero was no longer being discussed. June: two hundred and thirty-three. The number had entered a philosophical range. August: three hundred and eight. Several newsletters were unsubscribed from. Present: four hundred and twelve, which includes the newsletters that were resubscribed to after unsubscribing because the unsubscribe confirmation contained a promotional offer.
The Functionality
The badge said four hundred and twelve. It has been saying something in the four hundreds for several weeks. The specific number is no longer informative.
The app is opened regularly. Specific emails are read: the ones from people, the ones about things being delivered, the ones that arrived from addresses that look important. The ones from addresses that look like automated updates from platforms that were joined in 2019 are not read. They contribute to the count. The count continues.
The System
The system is working. Important emails are received and read. Unimportant emails accumulate in a count that represents the combined output of being a person who participates in the internet.
The badge has become an ambient feature of the phone, like the battery indicator or the time. It is present. It contains information. The information is not currently being acted on.
The inbox will be cleaned when there is time. There will be time when the count reaches five hundred, which feels like a round number at which action becomes necessary. The count is currently four hundred and twelve.
