The Matter of Alarm Volume Fear

The alarm is confirmed at full volume and then tested again twice to make sure it will be audible to someone who just listened to it.

3 MIN READsleep rituals

The presentation is at 8:30 AM. The subject sets the alarm for 6:15 AM, which allows ninety minutes for preparation. This is a reasonable margin.

The alarm is set. The subject notices the volume indicator. The volume is at maximum. This is correct. The subject presses the test button. The alarm sounds. It is loud. Satisfying.

The subject puts the phone down.

The subject picks the phone up. Checks the alarm. It is still set for 6:15 AM. It is still at maximum volume. This has not changed in the forty seconds since the last check.

The subject puts the phone down.

Ten minutes later, in bed, the subject picks the phone up. The alarm is still set. Still loud. Still 6:15 AM. The display confirms all three facts. The subject knows this because they checked the same display ten minutes ago.

There is a related concern: what if the phone runs out of battery. The phone is plugged in. The plug is confirmed. The phone is at 94% charge.

The subject sets a backup alarm on the second device. Sets a third alarm as a backup to the backup. Checks all three alarms. Checks the primary alarm again.

It is now 12:43 AM.

The alarm is set. The alarm will go off. The subject will hear it. None of this has changed.

The subject will check one more time before sleeping.
