Field Guide to Grocery Coupon Detour Operational Stages and Known Failure Modes

Stage 1: The Coupon Is Discovered

A coupon is found. It is in an app, on a piece of paper from a prior purchase, or in an email that was nearly deleted. The coupon is for a discount at a specific store or on a specific product category. The coupon has an expiry date. The expiry date is in four days.

The coupon has now become a time-bounded obligation.

Stage 2: The Scope Assessment

The coupon saves between twenty and sixty rupees on a minimum purchase. The minimum purchase is achievable. The discount is real. The only question is whether the coupon's store is on the current route.

It is not on the current route.

Stage 3: The Justification Phase

The detour is calculated. It adds between fifteen and twenty-five minutes. Two justifications are assembled in sequence. The first justification is the forty rupees. The second justification is that there were other items to buy anyway, which is a justification that could apply to any store at any time and is therefore not a justification specific to this coupon.

The coupon redeems value from a prior transaction in a way that costs more than the value being redeemed, which is not how redemption is supposed to work.

Stage 4: The Detour

The detour is taken. The minimum purchase is met, sometimes by adding an item not on the list. The coupon is applied. The forty rupees is deducted.

The cashier does not share in the triumph. This is appropriate.

Stage 5: The Accounting

The forty rupees is the number that will be remembered. The twenty-two minutes and the second form of justification will not be. When the trip is described to another person, the description includes the forty rupees and omits the detour time, producing an account of the coupon as an uncomplicated success.

This account is not inaccurate. It selects the facts that support the account it wants to give.

Stage 6: The Next Coupon

Another coupon arrives. The previous coupon's outcome is recalled as a success. The success provides evidence in favor of the next detour.

Field Note

The field note is brief. The forty rupees is real. The twenty-two minutes is also real. Arithmetic is available to any party who wants to apply it. No party wants to apply it.

The coupon detour continues.
