The Matter of Late Order Apology
A food delivery platform has issued an apology for a late order. The apology has been received. This office is examining the apology.
FIELD NOTES Re: Late Order Apology, Automated Delivery, June 2021 Classification: Communication Forensics
The apology arrived before the food.
This office considers that fact worth stating plainly before proceeding to the detailed examination, because the sequence is unusual and has implications for how the apology should be interpreted. An apology that precedes the thing it apologizes for is not strictly an apology. It is a forecast.
The forecast read as follows: "We're sorry your order is running a little behind schedule. We're working hard to get it to you as soon as possible." The message was sent from an automated system. It was addressed to the order-holder by first name. The first name is a standard personalization field and does not indicate personal knowledge of the order-holder's circumstances.
FORENSIC EXAMINATION
First observation: the platform apologized for a condition it was monitoring in real time. This means the platform knew the order was late before the customer had confirmed the order was late. The apology is therefore the customer's notification that the order is late, framed as an apology for the lateness. The customer learned about the problem and received regret for the problem in the same message at the same moment.
Second observation: "running a little behind schedule" is a characterization of severity. The order arrived forty-two minutes after the originally stated window. This office does not have a formal definition of "a little" but notes that forty-two minutes relative to a forty-five minute original estimate represents a delay of ninety-three percent. Whether ninety-three percent constitutes "a little" is a matter of framing.
Third observation: "working hard to get it to you as soon as possible" describes the desired state of affairs, not a confirmed state of affairs. No evidence of the effort was provided. The claim is unfalsifiable within the timeframe of the order.
The food arrived. It was warm. The apology was accepted. This office notes that acceptance of an apology is not the same as endorsement of its structure, and that endorsement of its structure is not the function of this office.
