The Action
Stopping the microwave one second before completion is a calculated intervention. The calculation is: the food is ready at approximately the same moment whether the timer runs to zero or whether the door is opened one second early. The food loses nothing from the early intervention. The silence gained is real.
The beep is three notes. They are not unpleasant notes. They are designed to alert, which means they are designed to penetrate attention.
