Field Notes on Umbrella Sharing Geometry
One umbrella. Two people. Both are trying to be under the umbrella. One shoulder on each person is wet. This is the optimal outcome.
FIELD NOTE 1: The Physics
A standard umbrella's canopy at walking height covers approximately one square meter. One adult occupies approximately 0.6 square meters of overhead projection. Two adults occupying the same umbrella space at standard walking proximity: approximately 0.9 square meters.
The umbrella covers one square meter. Two adults require 0.9 square meters. The math suggests adequate coverage.
The math is not accounting for movement.
FIELD NOTE 2: The Walking Problem
Two people walking together under one umbrella introduce two variables: lateral drift (each person's natural walk has a slight sideways component) and speed differential (slight differences in pace cause one to lead or fall behind, changing relative positions).
Each variable moves one person toward the edge of coverage. The person holding the umbrella adjusts. The adjustment brings the umbrella toward the moving person. The other person's outer shoulder enters the rain.
FIELD NOTE 3: The Adjustment Sequence
A typical shared-umbrella adjustment sequence:
- Person B drifts right. Person B's shoulder becomes wet.
- Person A, holding umbrella, moves umbrella right to cover Person B.
- Person A's left shoulder enters the rain.
- Person A drifts left, moving umbrella left.
- Person B's shoulder becomes wet again.
Repeat at approximately 4-second intervals.
FIELD NOTE 4: The Equilibrium
After approximately two minutes of adjustment, both people develop a natural position at approximately 30cm apart, both slightly inward, with the umbrella held at an angle that satisfies neither person fully but distributes the wet exposure symmetrically.
One shoulder each. This is the stable state. The walk continues.
