The Message Punctuation Reading Is Now Officially a Procedure
A period at the end of a text message has been under interpretive review since 9:47 AM and the sender has not been consulted.
Stage 1: Initial Receipt
The message arrives. It reads: "Sounds good."
This is a short message. It has two words. It ends with a period.
The period is noted. Under standard conversational conditions, "sounds good" communicates agreement. Under reading conditions that include a period, the message may communicate something different: a finality, a flatness, a closed door. The period sits after "good" with the weight of an administrator who has stopped caring.
This interpretation may be incorrect.
Stage 2: Contextual Review
The reader reviews the conversation history. The previous message, which was sent by the reader, asked if the other person was free on Saturday. The response, "Sounds good.", is technically an affirmative.
The punctuation is examined against recent messages. The sender uses periods inconsistently. The previous message, from two weeks ago, also ended with a period. Before that, no periods. The sample is insufficient for pattern analysis.
Under the governing rule, once message punctuation reading becomes a courtesy ritual, efficiency is no longer an acceptable reason to skip it.
Stage 3: Comparative Analysis
The reader types a response. They delete it. They type a different response. They consider whether a brief, warm response will signal that they are compensating for the other person's formality, which would imply awareness of the formality, which would be its own problem.
A neutral response is drafted.
Stage 4: The Finding
The period did not intend to communicate anything. The period was placed there by autocorrect. This information is not available to the recipient.
The sender typed the message in under four seconds while waiting for a kettle to boil. They do not remember the message's punctuation. They have already begun thinking about Saturday.
Stage 5: Resolution
Both people will meet on Saturday. Neither will mention the period. Neither will mention the fact that neither mentioned the period. The interaction will complete successfully under a shared agreement that no interpretation occurred.
This stage is mandatory and cannot be skipped.
