The Office Observes Admin Power
The group admin has not been relevant for eleven months. Today someone wants to change the name.
The Office Observes Admin Power
I.
The group chat was created three years ago. The admin is Rohan. Rohan became admin because Rohan created the group.
Rohan has not done anything as admin since creating the group. This is not unusual. Most group admin activity consists of existing.
II.
For three years, the admin status was irrelevant. The group sent messages. The group received messages. Nobody needed anything changed. The admin existed the way a constitutional monarch exists: present, titled, occasionally mentioned, functionally dormant.
III.
Then someone proposed changing the name.
The current name was "Koramangala Gang," chosen in 2023 when most group members lived in Koramangala. Two members had since moved to different neighborhoods. One member had moved to a different city. The name had become inaccurate.
The proposed new name was debated for eleven messages. No consensus was reached. One member suggested "Squad" which was rejected as too generic. Another suggested a phrase from an inside joke that three of eight members found funny and five found only slightly funny.
Nothing was agreed.
Then someone asked: "Who is admin?"
Rohan.
IV.
Rohan was now constitutional.
Rohan had opinions about the name but had not expressed them because Rohan's opinions, as admin, carried a weight he had not used in three years and was now reluctant to deploy incorrectly.
Rohan said: "I think we should vote."
The vote was ambiguous. One ambiguous reply was allowed to stand. Others copied the ambiguity to avoid commitment. No decision was reached that day.
The group name was changed by Rohan two weeks later to something nobody objected to primarily because nobody felt strongly enough to object.
No decision made in the process was treated as collective. The name exists.
V.
Admin power is invisible until it isn't. The second time it becomes visible, it has precedent. Next time someone wants something changed, they will go to Rohan first.
Rohan did not ask for this responsibility.
