Classification Notice for Notification Preview Reading
Classification Level: Behavioral — Phone / Digital Interface Subject: Notification Preview Reading Effective: Upon first deliberate use of the preview to read without triggering read status
What Is Being Classified
Notification Preview Reading: the practice of reading the visible portion of a message on the lock screen or notification banner, treating this read as unofficial, and then deciding whether to open the message based on what the preview revealed — without opening the message yet.
This behavior creates a state in which the reader has read and the sender does not know the reader has read. Managing this gap is the second activity that follows.
Why the Gap Is Managed
Opening a message confirms receipt. In contexts where a reply is expected, opening a message without replying creates social pressure. The preview reading exists to defer this pressure while still obtaining the information.
The user now knows what the message contains. The user has not officially read it. The user can reply when it is convenient.
The sender does not know the user is ready.
Complications
Complication One: The user has read the message. When the user replies, they must simulate the appropriate latency that suggests they read it later than they did. A ten-second reply to a message that appeared two hours ago reads differently than a ten-second reply to a message that appeared ten minutes ago.
Complication Two: The preview does not always show the full message. The user has sometimes read a preview and decided not to open it, only to discover later that the preview omitted critical content. The full message required a different response than the preview indicated.
Complication Three: The workaround requires memory of which messages have been preview-read and which have been officially read. This is a second organizational layer that did not previously exist.
Status
The phone is currently managing six messages that have been preview-read and not opened. The user knows the content of all six. The senders believe the user does not.
This is a workable arrangement. It is not a clean one.
Notification Preview Reading becomes policy upon its first intentional use. It was intentional.
