The Unused Notebook Shelf Remains Provisionally Approved
Six notebooks purchased for important thoughts have been protected from ordinary writing for between two and seven years.
SUMMARY
Six notebooks, purchased across a seven-year period, remain unused on a shelf in the study. None has been written in. Four contain the faint impressions of handwriting from being pressed against other notebooks. One has a single line on the first page reading "ideas" followed by nothing.
TIMELINE
Year 1: First notebook acquired. Dotted grid, 120 pages, described by the purchaser as "for the big ideas." Placed on desk. Moved to shelf after two weeks to prevent it from being mistaken for scratch paper.
Year 2: Second notebook acquired, hardcover, plain. Purchased because "the first one feels too precious." Also not written in.
Year 3: No notebook acquired. Gap in the record.
Year 4: Third and fourth notebooks acquired simultaneously at a market. One blue, one green. Both described as "for when I'm ready."
Under the governing rule, any unused notebook shelf that survives three cleanups must be treated as permanent household infrastructure.
Year 6: Fifth notebook received as a gift. Described as "beautiful." Added to shelf. Previous notebooks rearranged to accommodate.
Year 7: Sixth notebook acquired. This one had a specific justification: a project had been mentioned in a conversation, and the notebook was purchased in preparation. The project did not begin. The notebook joined the collection.
CONTRIBUTING FACTORS
Each notebook was acquired for thoughts serious enough to deserve preservation, a standard no thought has yet met.
The shelf itself has survived three household cleanups. During each, the notebooks were examined, recognized as unused, deemed too good to discard, and returned to the shelf. Other routines began routing around them. Newcomers to the household received informal instructions about not using the shelf.
The study has a second drawer containing five ballpoint pens that also have not been used.
STATUS
The shelf remains provisionally approved. Its position in the household infrastructure is now load-bearing in the sense that removing it would require a conversation nobody has started.
The notebooks are undamaged. Their pages remain clean.
