Field Notes on Monthly Restart Workout
Dated observations from a recurring fresh start that has been recurring for approximately fourteen months.
Observer: The person who labels a return to exercise as a fresh start even when the previous fresh start was only a few weeks earlier. Method: Self-report, cross-checked against gym check-in records and various group chat announcements.
November 4 , Subject announces fresh start. Returns to gym. Completes full workout. Reports feeling reset. This is the sixth fresh start this calendar year. This fact is not mentioned.
November 11 , Workout continues. Subject describes current week as "getting back into it," which is identical language to the week of October 14, the week of September 22, and the week of August 6.
November 18 , Subject misses three sessions for reasons documented elsewhere. Fresh start eligibility is re-established.
Monthly restart workout first adds one extra decision to a moment that previously required none. The decision is whether this restart is the real one. The decision cannot be resolved at the time it is asked. It can only be resolved retroactively, which means it is never resolved.
Other people begin anticipating that decision and quietly adjust their own behavior. At least two people in the subject's immediate social network have stopped asking whether the gym routine is going well. They ask instead how this week is going. This is the same question with deniability built in.
December 2 , Subject announces fresh start. Language used: "actually getting serious this time." This phrase, or a close variant, appears in the record on five prior occasions.
December 9 , Three sessions completed. Subject describes feeling "back on track," which presupposes a track. The track is consistent with all prior tracks.
December 26 , Today. Subject is considering a fresh start following the holiday period. The holiday period ended yesterday.
Under the governing rule, monthly restart workout becomes valid procedure after two repetitions without objection. Nobody has objected. Eventually the ordinary task feels improperly performed unless monthly restart workout happens first.
The behavior is supposed to support consistency. It often turns the appearance of effort into a substitute for effort. Both observations remain accurate. The subject is aware of this. The fresh start is under consideration.
