Operational Guidance for Monsoon Pothole Memory

The road has a pothole at the second left after the signal. This is known. The rain has covered it. The memory of its location is being tested.

OPERATIONAL GUIDE: Monsoon Pothole Navigation Prepared for: Regular commuters whose routes contain road damage that becomes invisible during rain.

THE MEMORY

Regular route use produces a mental map of road conditions. This map is built through accumulated exposure: the same road in dry conditions, at various times of day, across multiple weeks. The map records: locations of potholes, speed bumps, road edges that crumble, drainage gaps, and other surface conditions that affect riding comfort and safety.

The map is accurate. The map was built during visible conditions. The map remains available during conditions that make visibility impossible.

THE MONSOON CONDITION

During heavy rain, road surfaces become uniform: flat, reflective, and featureless. Potholes are filled to their brim with water and are visually indistinguishable from the surrounding surface.

Navigating by visual cues in monsoon conditions produces encounters with conditions that were known but have become invisible. Navigating by memory map produces routes that avoid the known conditions.

THE MAP'S ACCURACY

The memory map has limited accuracy for:

  • New potholes that developed after the last dry-condition assessment.
  • Repaired sections that have changed since the map was built.
  • Routes used infrequently where the map has lower resolution.

The memory map has high accuracy for:

  • Regularly used routes navigated multiple times per week.
  • Long-standing road conditions present across multiple seasons.

RECOMMENDATION

On familiar routes in monsoon conditions: trust the map. Steer based on memory rather than current surface appearance. The pothole is where the pothole was.

Update the map when dry conditions return. Note any new damage discovered during monsoon navigation for the next season's map.
