Finding on No Explanation Rule

Any no explanation rule stated as a boundary must be defended even after maintaining it becomes inconvenient.

Period Under Review

December 2022, final day. The no explanation rule operation is active. The year is nearly closed.

Current Status

Someone decides not to justify a personal choice and rehearses several justifications in case someone asks. The no explanation rule is in its operational phase. The rehearsal is its support infrastructure.

The first case of no explanation rule changes one small decision without being discussed. The choice was made. No explanation was offered. This was the intended outcome. Four explanations had been drafted mentally before the choice was made public, against the possibility that an explanation would be required. The explanations were not needed. They remain available.

Progress Against Objectives

After repetition, other people begin adjusting their behavior around no explanation rule. A second choice was made without explanation. A third. The people around the subject have stopped expecting explanations for certain categories of personal decision, which is the operational definition of the rule succeeding.

The 2022 language of protecting your peace turned personal limits into something people also performed publicly. The no explanation rule was the limit at its most structurally ambitious: not the refusal of a particular obligation, but the refusal of the class of obligation. This was also the most maintenance-intensive variant.

The boundary is meant to reduce obligation, yet maintaining the boundary becomes a new obligation. Each unexplained choice requires a preparatory period in which explanations are rehearsed and held in reserve. The period is not visible to others.

Key Findings

A limit counts as successful only if the person enforcing it can prove they still care about everyone affected. The unexplained choice does not provide this proof automatically. This is the operational gap. The explanation was withheld. The relationship was maintained through other means.

Metrics

  • Choices made without explanation: increasing
  • Explanations rehearsed but not given: consistent
  • Requests for explanation received: low
  • Requests for explanation anticipated: high
  • Resolution date: not applicable

Eventually no explanation rule acquires an unwritten enforcement system that everyone denies creating. The no explanation rule is now expected. Explaining something in a category where the rule applies now reads as slightly unusual.

End of period report. End of year.
