Minutes Concerning Date Picker Overshoot

A record of the recurring interface error in which the correct month is located, passed, and then retrieved in reverse.

Meeting: Date Entry Operations Status: Recurring Quorum: Achieved (one user, one interface)

AGENDA

  1. Review of last session's overshoot
  2. Corrective navigation
  3. Any other business

DISCUSSION

The user opened the date picker. The target month was three months forward. The user clicked the forward arrow. The user clicked again. The user passed the target month.

The screen offered an answer. The user required the answer to feel believable before proceeding. This review period began.

Under the governing rule, a workaround for date picker overshoot outranks the inconvenience that originally created it. This has been the case since the first overshoot. Nobody documented the first overshoot. It was treated as a personal preference until it received a preferred place in the routine.

Date picker overshoot received that preferred place. People start planning around it before the triggering situation even occurs. The user now decelerates two months before the target month. The deceleration is not in any interface specification.

FINDINGS

After two unchallenged uses, date picker overshoot gains procedural status for all similar situations. The interface has not changed. The behavior is now stable.

The user recognizes the target month and continues past it anyway. This is not a failure of recognition. It is a property of the rhythm established over many sessions, and the rhythm has precedent.

ACTIONS

  • No remediation proposed at this time.
  • The user will reverse direction and re-navigate to the correct month.
  • This action will be completed in the same session. It has been completed in all prior sessions.

NEXT MEETING

The next session will occur the next time a date input is required. The outcome is expected to be consistent with this record.

The routine then defends date picker overshoot as necessary evidence of competence, courtesy, or control. No dissent recorded.
