To: The Person in the Kitchen at 11:43 PM From: The Record Re: Continued Late Night Cereal Operations Date: Tonight, as with most nights

This correspondence serves to acknowledge the resumption of Late Night Cereal Operations, which were previously believed to have been resolved through the consumption of a full dinner at 7:30 PM.

They were not resolved.

Background

Dinner was consumed. Dinner was considered adequate. A period of settled satisfaction followed, lasting approximately two hours and forty minutes. At some point during the subsequent period, conditions changed. The nature of this change is not recorded. The result of this change is a person standing in the kitchen holding a bowl.

Current Status

The cereal has been selected. It is not a particularly exciting cereal. It does not need to be. The choice of cereal at 11:43 PM is not an act of enthusiasm. It is a negotiation: the minimum acceptable concession to a hunger that does not feel like it warrants cooking, cleaning, or explanation.

Cereal asks nothing of you.

The Governing Rule

A late night cereal may continue after hunger ends if stopping would make the previous effort feel wasted. The effort invested in standing up, walking to the kitchen, and opening the cabinet is not large. But it is not zero. The bowl is already in the hand.

Bowls are committed.

A Note on Sequence

This operation follows a documented sequence: identification of hunger, evaluation of options, rejection of cooking, consideration of fruit, rejection of fruit, selection of cereal, milk decision (yes), consumption, mild satisfaction, brief contemplation of second bowl, active rejection of second bowl, return to previous location.

The sequence is performed correctly or not at all.

Status

Operations continue. Estimated completion: twelve minutes.

No further notifications anticipated until approximately 11:40 PM tomorrow.
