Notice Regarding Side Hustle Spreadsheet

The spreadsheet created to track a side hustle's financials has, in a number of documented cases, become more developed than the side hustle itself.

NOTICE: Side Hustle Spreadsheet Form: Counterfactual Analysis Issued: Current

This notice presents a counterfactual analysis of what would have occurred if the effort invested in the side hustle spreadsheet had been invested in the side hustle.

Consider the documented case. An individual decides to pursue a side hustle, defined loosely as a revenue-generating activity conducted outside primary employment. They open a spreadsheet to organize the financial tracking for this venture. The spreadsheet is given a name. A revenue tab is created. Then an expenses tab. Then a projections tab, which requires some research on market size. The market size research produces a new tab. A break-even analysis requires a formula that takes approximately forty minutes to build correctly. A competitor landscape tab is added. A pricing model tab follows. The revenue tab, at this stage, contains column headers and no data.

The spreadsheet now has seventeen tabs. The venture has not yet generated, received, quoted, or invoiced any revenue. The spreadsheet is very good.

First counterfactual branch. If the spreadsheet construction time had been redirected toward the first revenue-generating action of the venture, the venture would have one customer, one sale, or one completed unit of service to its name. It would not have a break-even analysis, but it would have real data for the revenue tab.

Second counterfactual branch. If the individual had built the spreadsheet after making the first sale, the spreadsheet would have been built in two hours rather than twelve, because the model would have been constrained by actual cost and pricing information rather than projected estimates requiring separate research tabs.

Third counterfactual branch. If no spreadsheet had been built at all, the venture's initial traction would have been unaffected, because a side hustle in its first weeks does not require a break-even model. It requires customers.

The absurd rule is that preparing to track a business has the same psychological profile as running one, can be done indefinitely, and produces a satisfying artifact that resembles progress.

The contradiction is that the spreadsheet, a tool designed to support a business, has become the primary activity of a business that does not yet exist, and both the tool and the underlying project feel like the same project to the person building them.

In the counterfactual where this effort was redirected, some subset of these ventures would have launched. The spreadsheet would have followed. The break-even tab would have been built from real numbers.

The revenue tab remains open. The cells are waiting.
