Terms Governing Mystery Key Custody
Retention of an unidentified key constitutes acceptance of all custody obligations herein.
Article I: Definitions
Mystery Key shall refer to any key of unclear origin currently residing in a drawer, bowl, bag, or pocket within the Custodian's primary dwelling, vehicle, or workspace, for which the corresponding lock has not been identified within the preceding twelve (12) months.
Custody shall mean the voluntary retention of the Mystery Key beyond the point at which a reasonable person might have discarded it.
The Triggering Moment shall refer to the first time the Custodian considered throwing the Mystery Key away and did not.
Article II: Acceptance of Terms
By keeping the Mystery Key, the Custodian agrees to the following.
Once the Mystery Key has received a preferred place in the routine, it cannot be removed without first acknowledging that removing it constitutes a decision. The decision cannot be made casually. Inconvenience is insufficient grounds. The Custodian will require, at minimum, confirmation that the key does not belong to a thing that currently matters. This confirmation is not obtainable.
Article III: Governing Behaviors
Convenience explains the first act of custody. Habit explains every subsequent one. These are different explanations, and the transition between them happens without notice.
Under the terms governing mystery key custody, a workaround for the key's presence outranks the inconvenience that originally created it. People start planning around it before the triggering situation recurs. The key is moved. The key is accounted for. The key is, on at least one occasion, brought along as a precaution.
The routine, once formed, defends itself.
Article IV: Remedies and Limitations
The Custodian may discard the Mystery Key at any time. There is no penalty for doing so. No lock will spring open the moment the key enters the bin. No consequence will follow.
This information has not historically been sufficient.
Within six years of the Triggering Moment, other people begin anticipating that the Custodian will keep the key and quietly adjust their own behavior. They stop asking about it. They file around it the way one files around a piece of furniture that was placed before anyone arrived and will be there after everyone has gone.
Article V: Duration
These terms remain in effect until the Custodian either discards the Mystery Key or identifies the corresponding lock. In the event of the Custodian's relocation, the Mystery Key transfers to the new dwelling and the terms renew in full.
The key is probably from something. That something is probably fine now.
